Prenatal Formula

I drank a prenatal tea on my last pregnancies and felt it really helped me.  I used equal amounts of the cut form of these herbs:

Red Raspberry – Where mothers and babies are concerned, is an herb made in heaven.  It can be taken throughout the pregnancy with good results.  It builds tissue to the extent that it prevents tearing of the cervix of the uterus during birth.  During childbirth, hemorrhaging is prevented, the contraction of the uterine muscles are regulated during delivery and it also reduces false labor pains prior to birth.  It contains citrate of iron in an assimilable form and enriches early colostrum found in mother’s milk.  It also cleanses and prepares breasts for a pure milk supply for the nursing infant by cleansing and purigying the blood.  It helps promote painless and bloodless childbirth.

Oat Straw- Helps hold calcium in the body and is very high in silica.  It has a calming effect on the nerves and is a strong nutritive nervine for depression.  It provides the body with its many elements that work to maintain body balance.

Blessed Thistle- Helps stimulate milk production in nursing mothers, more so when taken in combination with Red Raspberry.  Acts to strengthen the heart, lungs, increases circulation to the brain by bringing oxygen to it which strengthens the memory and also aids in all liver disorders.

Nettle- This herb is very beneficial during pregnancy. Is an alkalizing herb and is useful as a rich source of minerals. Functions much like a mild Cayenne by opening the vessels, thus increasing circulation and uplifting a weary body relieving fatigue and exhaustion.   It is a mineral rich nutritive herb with vitamin K to guard against excessive bleeding.  It improves kidney function and helps prevent hemorrhoids.

I took 1 teaspoon of these combined herbs in 1 cup of hot water.  Put a tea saucer on top of your tea cup and let steep until warm.  I drank a quart a day of this tea.  Very helpful!

Dr. Christopher has a formula that you can use a dry tea (winter) and make an infusion with it or you can use the fresh herbs (summer) and make a green drink.

The herbs are:

Alfalfa Leaf, Red Raspberry leaves  and Comfrey Leaves. In the summer mix these leaves with as much pineapple juice as you need to make it drinkable and add several ice cubes.



Midwife’s Shock Formula (during Labor)

On my last child, a daughter,(13 years ago) I finally felt brave enough to try this formula.  It didn’t sound like it would taste very good so I went through my labors without it.  After taking it I can tell you that  I really missed out on my previous labors.

Shock Formula:

1 cup of warm water with 2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar, an eighth cup honey, and a full teaspoon of cayenne.

This stops the onset of shock, and warms the body, increases circulation, raising the blood sugar to provide energy and preventing hemorrhage danger. The taste of the formula actually tasted good to me, it seemed to be just what my body needed.



Pregnancy Herbal formula for the last 6 weeks

A friend of my daughter, Tiffany, asked for the 6 week formula for the last weeks of pregnancy.  I used this formula for the last 3 of 7 children.  On my 4th child I was dilated to 5 centimeters for 2 weeks before I went into effectual labor.  My first 3 children I had epidurals and really didn’t like how I felt after,(couldn’t walk to go to the bathroom, I got the shakes in the recovery room, etc, etc.)  so I went searching for a better way.

I found a midwife on my 4th child and had her deliver in a birth and family center.  I labored in a large jacuzzi tub and sipped apple juice with ice chips, no enema, and my husband slept in the bed with me during the night with our new baby daughter in the room with us.  What a change from the previous experiences!  I really loved how I felt after with no drugs in my system and our daughter didn’t need lights like our previous 3 needed.

On our 5th child I had our son on his due date, I didn’t have the false labor like I had on my other 4 because of the 6 week formula and the prenatal formula that I had taken.  We had a home birth with a midwife and had an excellent experience.

I usually call and order bulk herbs from The Herb Shoppe in Springville, Utah and then encapsulate them myself. www.drchristophersherbshop.com

So, I’ll order 1/4 of a pound up to a pound of herbs in powder and then order gelatin capsules (I usually order “00″ called double ott)  and fill them up myself.  I find I can save up to 50 % of the cost by doing a little extra work.

If you want to make up the six week formula yourself you would purchase equal amounts of each herb and mix them by shaking them in a quart jar:

Squaw Vine, Holy Thistle, Black Cohosh, Pennyroyal, False Unicorn, Raspberry Leaves, Lobelia. Take two or three capsules morning and evening is an aid in giving elasticity to pelvic and vaginal area and strengthening the reproductive organs for easier delivery.  Should be used only in the last six weeks before time of birth.

Lemon juice/Pure maple syrup fast

This is a great fast for cleansing the liver.

I remember the first time I went on this at the same time my husband went on it.  He was able to go on it for the full 10 days, I was so impressed at his willpower!  I think I lasted about 5 days.  It’s pretty hard to feed the kids and stay on a fast for very long for me but I have a friend who was able to do it feeding her children the whole time!  WOW!

The pure maple syrup called for can be purchased at Costco, they didn’t have it at Sam’s club when I had a membership there. I think it cost about 17 dollars a quart.  Regular syrup from the grocery store with sugar in it that you have with pancakes isn’t what you want.  Pure maple syrup is very expensive at the health food store and grocery store when I’ve bought it there before.

Directions for Stanley Burroughs’ Master Cleanse

He suggests staying on the fast for a minimum of 10 days.

(When the tongue is pink and smooth, this is a good indication the body is cleansed.)

INGREDIENTS

2 T Fresh squeezed organic lemon juice or organic lime juice (we have used non-organic as well)

2 T Genuine Pure maple syrup

1/10 tsp. Cayenne pepper (40,000 H.U.)

10 oz Distilled water, warm

Some people use a Laxative herb tea- One tea bag for each day you intend to be on the cleanse.

(Two bags per day if you intend to take the tea each night and morning you are on the cleanse.)

Real salt (sea salt)-Two tsp. for each day you intend to be on the cleanse.

Distilled water-may be taken as desired.

DIRECTIONS:

The night before you begin the cleanse, drink a cup of laxative herb tea. (NOTE:  The laxative tea may be taken in the morning in place of the real salt and water.)

First thing the next morning, mix a full quart of luke-warm water and add two level teaspoons of real salt.  Drink the entire quart of salt and water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.  Several eliminations will likely occur.  (Stay close to a toilet!)  This may be taken as often as needed for proper washing of the entire digestive system.

Next, combine the juice, maple syrup, and cayenne in a 10 oz glass and fill with warm water (cold water may be used if preferred.)

Drink from six to twelve glasses of the lemonade daily during the waking period for the duration of the cleanse. We drink distilled water every half hour after the lemonade at the top of the hour.  This keeps us from getting hungry if we alternate lemonade, water, lemonade,water every half hour.

Peppermint tea can also be used during this fast.  It helps with digestion, cleanses and tones the body.

You feel so much more energy and clarity of mind after finishing the fast.  My husband feels like he could go on forever after he has been on the fast for about  3 days.  Listen to the Spirit and to your body as to how long you should stay on the fast.



Fasting to Detoxify the System

In Paul Bragg’s book, The Miracle of Fasting, he makes this following statement about toxemia or  auto intoxication:  “I have come to regard auto intoxication as my worst, grimmest foe in the fight for Agelessness and Longevity.  It is even more devastating morally than physically.  It is mind-poisoning as well as body-poisoning………”

Have you noticed that when you are sick it is difficult to feel the Spirit?  The energy and enthusiasm to do what you feel you need to and would like to do is beyond your ability if not also your desire to do at the time.  When you feel healthy and strong and have energy to complete all your responsibilities and tasks under the direction of the Spirit, you feel invigorated and it’s easy to feel a lot more gratitude.

Detoxifying the system, as Dr. John Christopher states in his book, School of Natural Healing, ” has the purpose of purifying the human body for healing.”

We use many types of fasting to detoxify the system.  I’ll list  most of the ones we use in our family.

  • In my post, Gallstones & Kidney Stones, I talk about the method of dissolving stones in the system via an apple juice fast, distilled water and extra virgin olive oil.  This works equally well for both stones and literally dissolves them and they usually pass after the drinking of the olive oil on the third day.  Since poor digestion is the reason we become toxic in the first place, it is essential to clean out the system so the body can assimilate nutrients and eliminate toxins. (People who have problems with Gall Bladder and Stones usually eat large amounts of meats and fatty foods.)
  • The next type of fasting is a Distilled Water Fast.  In Paul Bragg’s book, The Miracle of Fasting, he suggests that we should fast once a week for 24 hours on distilled water.  This would accelerate  detoxifying  your body to a great degree.  You can fast seasonally for 3-7 days on the same, listen to the Spirit and your body.  Different people have different opinions.  From my reading, in general, over 10 days is hard on your body and unnecessary and is hard on your eliminating organs.
  • Another type  would be a lemon juice /maple syrup fast.  Lemon juice and pure maple syrup contain many vitamins and minerals that help the body cleanse and revitalize itself.  This fast is especially good to break up mineral and protein deposits in the body.  It is also used for weight loss.  This is especially good for cleansing the liver which also would enhance digestion.  In his book, The Cancer Therapy, (now called, The Gerson Therapy ) Dr. Gerson says all cancer patients have  toxic livers and  detoxifying the liver is the key to regaining health.  This is a great fast.  We feel plenty of energy on this fast.  Some people in our family can go on this for the recommended full 10 days and some of us feel a great accomplishment if we can make it from 3 to 5 days.
  • Juice Fasting is a great way to detoxify.  It is recommended by Dr. N.W. Walker’s book, Raw Vegetable Juices. He suggests not to do this if you have appendicitis or if there is a tendancy towards it.  By drinking quarts of fresh, raw juices and eliminating toxic matter through the bowels helps cleanse morbid matter that has accumulated in our natural eliminative channels.

I’ll write separate posts on each of these fasts for those who are interested.

When you complete these fasts weekly (water fasts), or seasonally or biannually, along with a good diet, you’ll notice more energy and less illness.



Green Drink Shake with Sprouts Recipe

We drink this nearly every morning.  This makes 4 large 12 ounce glass fulls.  You can save what you don’t drink in the morning and put it in the fridge and drink it throughout the day.

3 cups orange juice (I take a can of frozen orange juice and scoop out a large scoop into my K-Tec blender and add 3 cups of water)

2 frozen bananas

5 frozen strawberries

1/2 pound of spinach (stems and all) You can subsitute romaine or any leafy green lettuce

1 cup of wheat sprouts or more (the sprouts are as long as the seed)

1 cup of ice

It takes about 2 full minutes of blending to get the sprouts blended well.  I have added alfalfa sprouts instead of wheat sprouts and the taste is a little stronger, but it still works.  Any fruit will work.  Pineapple helps to make it sweet and also bananas.  Frozen grapes make it sweet to taste but seem to create gas.  (A word to the wise)



Fermented Foods-Rejuvelac Recipe

In Ann Wigmore’s book, Recipes For Longer Life, she explains the benefit of fermented foods.

“Food that is fermented is filled with enzymes.  People known for longevity–the Hunzas, the Georgians– use much fermented food.  In Georgia, Russia, people eat yoghurt, sour bread, sour milk, soured vegetables.  They also eat naturally made sauerkraut and sour pickles.  These people seldom have digestion problems.

Good digestion is the main reason we stay well and poor digestion is the main reason for toxicity in the body!  This is huge!  Once we understand how important it is to assist our bodies to appropriately digest our foods, learning about fermented foods is incredibly important!

When I first started making rejuvelac we had to hold our noses and it wasn’t as pleasant of a drink as I had hoped it would be.  This new recipe for full flavored rejuvelac could almost be called delicious.  This recipe has a lemony flavor and is pleasant tasting.

For approximately 3 cups

You will need:  1 C wheat berries

3 C spring or filtered or distilled water

a glass jar with a wide mouth and a sprouting lid (mesh holes from health food store)

1.    Wash seed by rinsing well (in tap water), and scrubbing seeds with hands to remove any outer residue.  Allow dead seeds to float to top of container–skim them off and discard–they will not promote fermentation.

2.   Soak the wheat berries the first time for 24 hours.   (The seed is becoming porous.)

3.   After 24 hours, discard ( pour off your wheat water and drink the water or use it in soups. ) Sprout the wheat by leaning your jar at a 45 degree angle upside down in the morning.  In the evening rinse the wheat by filling the jar half full and dumping out the water and turning the jar upside down at a 45 degree angle again.

4.   The next morning put your wheat that has sprouted in the blender with 3 cups of distilled or filtered water and let it sit in a jar with a screen over it.  It will be ready to use on the third day.  Store drained in the fridge.  Ideally serve at room temperature.

Rejuvelac puts into your body the enzymes cooked food doesn’t .  Enzymes help friendly bacteria such as lactobacillus bifidus to grow.  Lactobacillus in turn gives off lactic acid, a natural astringent, which helps your large intestine maintain its natural, healthy, vitamin-producing environment.  This leads to a clean colon where sludge does not collect on colon walls, and where harmful, disease producing bacteria are unable to survive.

Enzymes assist your body in digesting your food and leads to much better health.



Sourdough Wheat Bread Recipe

I went to a cooking class with my darling sister-in-law that was given by the Simmons who wrote the book, “Original Fast Foods”. This class was another voice in how to eat healthier.  I enjoyed it a lot. I would highly recommend attending one of their classes.  Their recipes are especially healthful and delicious.

Even though I had cooked with sourdough previously, they renewed my enthusiasm and understanding of why to use sourdough. I had always looked at it as something delicious or something to use when we couldn’t get yeast and had to use natural leavening.  They expanded on how much more  healthful bread is by using a natural sourdough leavening.

In my next post I will share with you what Ann Wigmore, in, Recipes For Longer Life says about fermented foods and how they help you to GET WELL.

5 cups cold water

1 cup sourdough starter

10-12 cups freshly ground wheat flour

4 tsp sea salt

Begin process in the morning:

In Bosch mixing bowl or other bowl combine water, salt starter, and 9 cups of flour.

Knead two minutes until well mixed and smooth.  Whjile continuing to knead, slowly add remaining flour until you create a dough-ball consistency.  You’ve added enough flour when the dough pulls away cleanly from side of bowl during kneading and dough ball chases the hook as it turns.

Knead with mixer for a total of 10 minutes on #2 speed; or, knead by hand for 15 minutes.

Spray a large bowl with olive oil spray.  Add dough from mixer to the bowl and cover with damp dish towel; place in the refrigerator until bedtime.  Before retiring for the evening, pull bowl out of refrigerator and place on counter top for the night.

The next morning careully cut dough into four equal pieces.  Wet countertop slightly with water and then gently “pat” out each section into a large square taking care not to break the gluten strands.  Then fold spuare from top to bottom into thirds like folding a letter.  Then fold in thirds again, from side to side.  Shape dough to fit into a bread pan.  Place dough into a sprayed glass loaf pan with seam side down.  Press loaf firmly in loaf pan to spread dough evenly to all four corniers.  Smooth all edcges and cover with a cool, damp, thick, dish towel.  Allow to rise, which takes about 3 to 4 hours.

When bread is nearing its full rise, place a pan full of water on the top or bottom shelf of the oven and preheat oven to 450 degrees.  Place bread dough in oven and bake for 35 minutes at 450 degrees.  Remove from oven and place bread on cooling racks.  Steam from the water helps create a nicer crust.

By way of explanation; The lactobacilli, which neutralize the toxic effects of the indigestible components in grain and cause the bread to rise, thrive best at temperatures between 50 and 65 degrees.  Below 50 they begin to go dormant.  Above 70 less lactobacilli and more yeast grows.  By making dough in the morning and placing it in the refrigerator until evening, you will provide several hours where the lactobacilli enjoy feeding at temperatures that are ideally suited to promote their growth.  Removing the dough from fridge just before bedtime allows several more hours of leavening at just the right temperature range.  The folding technique the following morning helps strengthen the gluten so that the losf is more resilient and will have a finer texture and will bake more evenly.  Patting the dough down in the morning also reinvigorates the lactobacillli microorganisms causing a rising action to create beautifully raised loaves of bread, each and every time, in just a few hours.



Granola Recipe

My husband and I stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in Wyoming that served us breakfast during a vacation trip.  This recipe was inspired by the delicious granola they served us up in their Tree House.

6 cup old fashioned oatmeal or rolled 6 grain

1 cup wheat germ

1 cup raw coconut

1 cup raw sunflower seeds

1/2 cup flax seeds

1/2 cup sesame seeds

1 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans or almonds)

1 Tablespoon vanilla

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup olive oil

2/3 cup raw honey

1 Tablespoon cinnamon

After cooking add 1 cup of raisins while still warm

Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.  Mix all wet ingredients in another bowl.  Combine both and mix well.  Scoop onto a  spray oiled cookie sheet to put in oven at 250 degrees for an hour stirring 2 or 3 times or on plastic dehydrator trays in your dehydrator  and cook for 2-3 hours.  The advantage to cooking the granola in a dehydrator is the low temperature used which will preserve enzymes.  Add raisins after cooking while still warm.  Put in a container with a lid  immediately.

This is delicious as a topping for frozen fruit that has been run through a champion juicer with a blank plate or with soy or rice or almond milk for breakfast or dry as a snack!



Prostate Formula

We have a wonderful older neighbor, in his 80’s that called me and asked me what to do because he had not been able to urinate for days.  I ran over to his house with these five herbs that I had him make into a tea.

  • Catnip (helps clean out mucus in the body,normalizes blood pressure, and improves circulation)

  • Buchu (absorbs excessive uric acid; reducing bladder irritations, one of the best urinary organ herbs and soothing when there is pain while urinating.)

  • Stinging Nettle (increases the flow of urine, shrinks inflamed tissues, helps blood circulation and purifies the blood, alkalizing and a good source of minerals)

  • Cornsilk(used for over a century for kidney problems, for acute and chroniclaly inflamed bladders and the prostate gland.

  • Saw Palmetto(calms nerves and acts as an antiseptic,has a good effect upon all the glandular tissues)

  • When infection is involved, separately use Echinacea for a week to 10 days as listed below. (expels poisons and toxins and is an excellent blood cleanser, also, works like penicillin in the body with no side effects)

He used equal parts of each and  put 1 tsp of the combined herbs into a cup of water that had been boiled.  He then put a saucer on top of the cup and waited for 20 minutes until it had cooled enough to drink.  He strained the tea and told me that very shortly he was able to void. Prostatitis, common in men of all ages, is the inflammation of the prostate gland.   He was a delighted and grateful  80 year old cowboy .  Giddy-up!

There are 3 types of prostatitis:

  • Acute infectious prostatitis is usually caused by bacteria from another part of the body that invades the prostate.   This happens suddenly.You may experience pain between the rectum and scrotum, fever, frequent urination accompanied by a burning sensation, a feeling of fullness in the  bladder, and blood or pus in the urine.

  • Chronic (long-term) prostatitis is also a bacterial infection.  When an infection is involved we have included echinacea in the formula temporarily, 4 capsules a day for a week to 10 days. You could also use the infection fighting formula in this blog until symptoms disappear.

  • Non-infectious prostatitis with similar symptoms but with no infection

  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is the gradual enlargement of the prostate which happens to about 50% of men over 50 and 75% of men over 70.  Because of the change in hormones he has an overproduction of prostate cells which results in prostate enlargement.An enlarged prostate, if it becomes too large, obstructs the urethral canal, interfering with urination and the ability to empty the bladder completely.

If the bladder doesn’t empty completely the kidneys also may not empty as they should. A major symptom is the need to urinate frequently, becoming more frequent as time passes. Many will find themselves rising several times during the night to urinate.

  • The cause of all disease is Toxemia.  An inability of the body to expel toxic wastes from the body faster than you can put them in. Your body cannot absorb nutrients and heal itself unless we cleanse the system.

All types of prostatitis, if untreated, can lead to impotence.  This would be a more severe symptom but the cause is the same.

  • VITAMINS AND MINERALS: Natural Multiple Vit & Mineral Supplement , B Complex,Zinc and Selenium are very important in helping to prevent and alleviate prostate problems. Just increasing zinc has helped some men to stop having problems with needing to get up at night and having little or no stream.

Many friends and family members have used this prostate formula and have experienced great relief.  If you would like to prevent the problem you would want to get on a healthier diet which we will cover in a future post.

Two other formulas that you would want to take on a regular basis until the problem is solved would be Dr. Christopher’s formulas #22 and #23.

Formula #22 is an aid for the prostate area.  In case of malfunction I would suggest this combination to assist the male:  cayenne, ginger, golden seal root, gravel root or queen of the meadow root, juniper berries, marshmallow root, parsley root or herb, uva ursi leaves.  This will dissolve the stones that are in the kidneys, as well as clean out other sedimentation and infection in the prostate.  Mix the powders and place in  No. “0″ capsules and take two or more morning and night, with parsley tea when possible.

Formula #23 is a hormonal herbal combination that is needed by both men and women.  This provides natural foods and materials to help rebuild weak, malfuntioning areas and help keep the organs healthy.  Herbs are food so there are no “side effects” that you get from synthetic drugs.

You can purchase these already encapsulated at a Dr. Christopher website or you can purchase the bulk formula from a Dr. Christopher website and encapsulate them yourself.  I purchase an equal amount of each herb listed, mix it together and encapsulate it myself.  I save about 50% of the cost by doing this.
